Apple on Campus

The CITES homepage has plenty of resources for technology on-campus. It has troubleshooting tips, Internet set up in residence halls and emergency alert systems. It’s a great place to start if you’re having problems with your Internet connection in University housing or with your illinois.edu e-mail address.

Set up your CITES e-mail address with Apple Mail (modified from CITES’ instructions)

1. Open Mail on your Mac. If this is your first time using Mail, a window will automatically pop up to help you set up a new account. If this is not your first time using Mail, go to Preferences and click Add an Account.

2. Enter the following information:

Account Type: Select IMAP
Account Description: Name this whatever you want to help you identify from your other e-mail addresses in Mail, if you have any. For example, you could name it “CITES” or “Illinois.”
Full Name: Whatever you want people to see when you e-mail them. You can enter your first and last name, or any other variation on your name that you like.
Email address: Enter your entire e-mail address here, including “@illinois.edu.”

Click Continue.

3. Enter the following information on the next screen:

Incoming Mail Server: Enter express.cites.uiuc.edu
User Name: Enter your NetID.
Password: Enter your password now if you’d like to automatically receive your e-mail when you open Mail. If you would like to be able to enter your password each time you get your mail for security reasons, leave this blank and it will prompt you for it later.

Click Continue.

4. At this point, if you have not entered your password, it will try to connect to the server. You will see a message saying that the IMAP server has failed. If you did enter your password in the previous step, check your password and try again. If you did not enter a password intentionally, click Continue.

5. On the next screen, under Incoming Mail Security, check the box next to “Use Secure Sockets Later (SSL)”. Select “Password” for Authentication.

6. On the next screen, Mail will prompt you for your Outgoing Mail Server. If you are connecting mainly on the campus network (if you live in University housing), enter express-smtp.cites.uiuc.edu in this field. If you are connecting from home, you will need to ask your Internet Service Provider for this information. You do not need to click “Use Authentication” or enter a user name or password here. Click continue.

7. Mail will show you a summary of the account information that you entered. Click Continue or Done, and you’re ready to go.
